Research objective
1) To
investigate Grice’s four conversational maxims; maxim of quality, maxim of
quantity, maxim of relation and maxim of manner in a synchronous form of
Computer Mediated Communication (CMC).
2) To
study the dominant maxim being used in synchronous form of CMC through Whatsapp
conversations.
Purpose of research
1) To
meet the requirement of ENGL 4740 – Computer Application in Language Learning
(CALL) assessment of the course.
2) To
explore CALL using previous knowledge on Pragmatics, in particularly Grice’s
four conversational maxims.
Brief Literature Review
According to Sharples, M., Arnedillo-Sanchez,
I., Milrad, M. & Vacoula, G. (2009), they attempted to address the major
issues on mobile learning and ways it can be designed and evaluate and there
are discussions on how learning contexts are created through communication and
how technology supports communication for learning. They found that people are
linked with their surroundings, friends and technology and this creates sites
for learning. The technology supports their mobile learning as their
conversations can be carried on from place to place, from time to time and from
topic to topic.
Mobile learning is similar to mobile
technology where is can use whenever and wherever. Mobile technology functions
to aid and complete one’s task, to socialize and also to get learning materials
easily. Whereas mobile learning allows all human beings to access information
and at the same time learning anywhere anytime. Thus, mobile learning can
transform the delivery of education and training. Furthermore, remote areas can
be reached by using mobile learning which makes education easier. There are
several research studies mentioned in this book; mobile technology in nursing,
informal learning and business and flexible learning. Mobile technology in
nursing was such a big help where they can get access to information at the
exact time application is needed while for the research on informal learning;
they found that mobile learning is quite handy and effective anywhere and
anytime. As for business and flexible learning, it is proven that mobile learning
eases their interviews with clients and aids them to get learning materials for
jobs. (Mohamed Ally, 2009)
A study on interactional coherence
in Computer-Mediated Communication was done where the researchers evaluated the
coherence of computer-mediated interaction by surveying on cross turn
coherence. They assumed that text-only CM (Computer-Mediated) is incoherent as
they have certain limitations which the spoken language does not have. Results
showed that text-only CM is incoherent due to limitations such as turn-taking,
reference, lack of simultaneous feedback and disrupted adjacency. However,
text-only CMC and spoken language are more and less the same as both are dysfunctionally
and advantageously incoherent in nature which results to overlapping exchanges
and topic decay over time. (John Wiley & Sons Inc., 1999-2013). Apart from
that, in pragmatics, Grice (1989) emphasized that the notion of conventional
implicature has played a very important role in conversation which suggests the
text must follows 4 major maxims of conversation which are the maxim of
quality, maxim of quantity, maxim of relevance and maxim of manner.
Based
on the three literature reviews above pertaining mobile learning and
Pragmatics; it shows how Pragmatics features are very important in CMC and even
in mobile learning. Hence, we are investigating the four conversational maxims
by H.P. Grice in Whatsapp conversations where mobile learning is done by most
IIUM students. Further elaborations will be discussed in our findings of this
paper.

Research Design
Methodology
A Whatsapp group conversation up to
5 pages is being copied and later analysed using Grice’s four conversational
maxims. The analysed data is put into tables. Interpretation and summary of the
analysed data is then written.
Sampling
A Whatsapp group’s conversation
between 30 students and Prof Faridah on an event; Islamic World Film Festival
that will be held in September 2013.
Instrument
Four conversational maxims by H.P.
Grice which are maxim of quality, maxims of quantity, maxims of relation and
maxims of manner.
Analysis
From the findings, two maxims were conquering the conversation between 30 students and Prof Faridah on an event; Islamic World Film Festival that will be held in September 2013. Students come from different Kuliyyah of International Islamic University Malaysia, Gombak. Their conversation was mainly about the task given and what need to be accomplished in order for the event to run smoothly. The whatsapp chat was preferred since it would be easier for students to be informed about anything regarding the event at any time since it is available in any smartphones and tablets. Since most of the committees are using smartphones, hence, whatsapp chat is chosen.
In the conversation, everyone responded and replied to the information or question asked. It shows that there existed the cooperative principle in which receiver of those messages understood the messages and hence responded or gave feedback. According to laurahughes.com (n.d), it is the basic assumption that we make in order to cooperate with one another through a construction of meaningful conversation. Therefore, there are two principles built this cooperative principle; why speech errors is often ignored and why we can find the real meaning of certain statements though literally it may sounds false, unrelated and ridiculous. This is what can be seen from the whole conversation that committees responded to anything Prof. Faridah said or asked and they applied the maxims of manner to avoid such ambiguity of the information sent. Moreover, the committees’ acts towards Prof Faridah somehow reflects their respect towards her since she is older and also the advisor of this event. In addition, the acceptance of any errors in spelling and the usage of short forms are accepted as the students still replied in the sense of applying the maxims of quality. For example, when Prof Faridah said “Atikah and Rauf.Hw r u guys going tmrw?Pls arrive early.very2 important to do so.Wecld go together in my car by 10am.pls dress well.no slippers. Raouf replied by saying, “Orait Prof. Noted. Will go with your car”. The respond is very short but in accordance with the question and warning stated by Prof Faridah. The debarment Prof at the beginning of Raouf’s respond supported the fact that students respect Prof Faridah of her position and age. It is very obvious that there are the usage of short forms like “cld (could)” and “pls (please)”.
Another example of both maxims of manner and quantity is when the committees followed Raouf’s instruction when he asked all of them to respond at the whatsapp chat by introducing names and positions. They all responded as how he wants except for Leng who violated the maxim of relevant and quantity as he implies some jokes in the conversation likely “hahaha” and “ok x” which are not needed in the conversation. Though he violated the two maxims mentioned, he still adheres to maxim of quantity and relevance when he did replied as according to what Raouf asked.
Conclusion
The four conversational maxims
between the students and Prof Faridah are widely used their whatsapp
conversation. However, the most frequent maxim used is the maxim of quantity
where the information nor utterances are given as required, not too ambiguous
nor too much. The students in this whatsapp conversation used this maxim
frequently throughout the conversation to create a formal mood and to be
professional in their work. Furthermore, probably the maxim of quantity is the
most suitable maxim to be conversed in interacting with someone who is not from
our range of age, status and background. For instance, the students in this
whatsapp conversation are dealing with Prof Faridah who happens to older by
years from them and she is also a lecturer. Thus, the maxim of quantity is used
as a sign of respect by going straight to the point in answering questions and
discussing serious matters.
